You are planting a clump, not a tree
The thing you put in the ground is a rhizome, a fat underground stem, and what grows up out of it is not a trunk at all but a tightly rolled column of leaf bases called a pseudostem. That pseudostem grows, makes leaves, flowers once, carries one bunch of fruit, and then it is finished. It never fruits again. What keeps the planting alive is the ring of new shoots, called suckers or pups, that push up around the base from the same rhizome.
This changes what planting means. You are not establishing a specimen that will stand there for twenty years. You are establishing a colony that rebuilds itself from below every year or so, and your job from the first day is to give it enough room, enough food and enough of an unbroken warm season for one pseudostem at a time to reach flowering size. Everything else in this guide follows from that.
Choosing the spot
Full sun, deep soil, and shelter from wind, in that order of importance. A banana wants at least eight hours of direct sun to build the leaf area a bunch needs; in half shade it grows perfectly happily for years and simply never flowers. The plant is also enormous by any garden standard, so measure before you commit: even a compact clump throws leaves eight feet (2.4 m) across, and a full-sized one shades a car.
Wind is the site factor most people underestimate. Banana leaves are wide, thin and unsupported, and the roots are a shallow plate rather than an anchor. A gusty site will shred every leaf into ribbons and, in a real storm, push a fruiting pseudostem flat. Plant against a wall, a hedge or the leeward side of a building. A spot that is warm, bright and still will out-yield a spot that is warm, bright and exposed by a wide margin.
Drainage decides survival. Banana roots want constant moisture and cannot tolerate standing water; the rhizome rots from the inside out within a week of sitting in a puddle in warm soil. If your ground holds water after rain, build a mound twelve inches (30 cm) high and four feet (1.2 m) across and plant into that rather than digging a hole that will act as a sump.

Getting it in the ground
Plant when the soil is warm and the risk of frost is behind you, and plant as early in that window as you dare. Every warm week counts because of how long the plant needs to fruit, and a banana put in late is a banana that spends its first winter far short of flowering size.
- Dig wide and enrich generously Make a hole two to three feet (60 to 90 cm) across and about eighteen inches (45 cm) deep. Unlike most fruit, a banana genuinely wants a rich hole: mix a third to a half well-rotted manure or mature compost through the backfill. This plant is a heavy feeder from the moment it starts.
- Set the rhizome at the right depth Bury the rhizome so its top sits three to four inches (8 to 10 cm) below the surface, with any existing pseudostem upright and the growing point clear. Too shallow and the clump heaves over as it grows; too deep and the emerging shoot exhausts itself before it reaches light.
- Space for the clump, not the plant Allow eight to ten feet (2.4 to 3 m) between planting points. It looks absurd with a two foot (60 cm) shoot in the ground. Within eighteen months each point is a clump of three or four pseudostems and the spacing looks tight rather than generous.
- Water in and mulch heavily Soak thoroughly, then lay four to six inches (10 to 15 cm) of coarse organic mulch out to the full width of the hole, leaving a hand's width clear around the stem. Mulch is doing real work here: it holds the constant moisture the roots want and feeds the clump as it breaks down.
- Stake only if the site is exposed A young banana does not need support, but on a windy site a single stout stake and a soft tie keep the shoot vertical through its first season. Remove the tie once the pseudostem is thicker than your wrist so it does not cut in.
Growing in a container
A container banana is a legitimate approach where winters are too cold to leave the clump outside, but be honest about the size involved. Start in a fifteen gallon (55 L) pot and expect to move up to twenty-five gallons (95 L) or more within two seasons. Anything smaller dries out by midday in summer and the plant simply stalls at a size that will never flower.
Use a free-draining mix with plenty of body to it rather than a light peat-based potting mix, which collapses and holds water. Put the pot on a wheeled base before you fill it. You will be moving it, and a filled twenty-five gallon pot with a banana in it is beyond lifting.
Container clumps need thinning harder than ground clumps. One fruiting pseudostem and one successor sucker is the working maximum in a pot; three or four suckers in the same volume of soil produce four undersized plants and no fruit.
What to write down in the planting year
Record the planting date and the exact position of each clump, sketched or measured from something fixed. Within two years the original pseudostem will be gone and the clump will have shifted a foot or so in whichever direction the strongest suckers came up, and knowing where you started tells you which way it is traveling.
Also note the date the first new leaf unrolled after planting. That single date, repeated over a few seasons, becomes your local marker for when the soil in your particular garden is genuinely warm enough for a banana to move, and it is far more useful than any general advice about timing.
