Decide what you are trying to save
Winter with a banana is a choice between three quite different objectives, and choosing the wrong one wastes a great deal of effort. The easiest is to save the rhizome only: let the top freeze, cut it away, protect the ground, and accept a fresh start in spring. Harder is to save the pseudostem, keeping the standing column of leaf bases alive so it continues from where it left off. Hardest, and only realistic under cover, is to keep the plant actively growing through the cold months.
The reason this choice matters so much is the length of the run to fruiting. A banana pseudostem needs roughly twelve to eighteen months of frost-free growing to reach flowering size, and it does not bank progress across a death. If the top dies every winter, the clock restarts every spring and the plant will grow beautifully forever and never fruit. In a climate that kills the top annually, fruit realistically means growing under cover or in a container that comes inside.

Preparing the clump before the cold
How you handle the plant in the weeks before cold weather matters as much as the protection itself. The aim is to have the plant hardened rather than soft and growing when the first frost arrives.
- Stop feeding well before the cold Cut off all nitrogen feeding about two months before you expect first frost. Soft, sappy new growth freezes at temperatures that firmer tissue shrugs off, and it is also the tissue that rots first.
- Reduce watering, do not stop it Ease back as growth slows. The rhizome should stay barely moist through the cold months, never wet. Waterlogged cold soil rots rhizomes faster than the cold itself kills them.
- Remove the smaller suckers Take out surplus suckers before winter and leave one successor. A crowded clump traps damp at the base through the cold months, and small suckers will not survive anyway.
- Mulch deeply over the rhizome Pile eight to twelve inches (20 to 30 cm) of straw, leaves or bark over the base of the clump, spreading out three feet (90 cm). This is the protection that actually saves the plant; everything above ground is secondary.
- Keep the mulch dry if you can A sheet of plastic or a board over the mulch, weighted at the edges, keeps winter rain out while the mulch does its insulating work. Pull it off as soon as the weather warms so the crown does not cook or sit damp.
Wrapping the pseudostem
Where you only get light frosts, keeping the standing pseudostem alive through the winter is worth real effort, because it means the plant carries its accumulated growth into the next season instead of restarting. This is the difference between fruiting and not fruiting.
Cut the leaves off the pseudostem, leaving the bare column. Wrap the column in several inches of dry insulation, straw or row cover or old blankets, from the ground upward, and then wrap the whole thing in a waterproof outer layer with the top covered so rain cannot run down inside. The inside must stay dry. A wrapped stem that gets wet rots reliably, and you will unwrap a brown column in spring.
Alternatively, and more simply, cut the pseudostem down to about three feet (90 cm), set a wire cage around it, fill the cage with dry leaves, and cap it. You lose the top of the stem but keep the base, which is where the reserves are, and there is far less to go wrong. Unwrap gradually once hard frosts have passed, checking the stem is still firm and cream-colored inside at the cut.
Unwrap earlier than feels comfortable. A stem left wrapped into warm weather sweats and rots at exactly the point in the year when you thought you had won.
Containers and lifting the rhizome
A container banana is the straightforward answer in a cold climate. Bring the pot in before nights drop below 50F (10C) and put it in the brightest place you have. It will not grow much, and it will drop older leaves; that is fine. Water sparingly, just enough that the mix never dries completely, and give no feed at all until new growth resumes in spring. Watch for spider mites, which thrive in dry indoor heat.
If the plant is too large to bring in whole, you can cut it back hard, lift the rhizome, shake off most of the soil, let the surface dry for a day or two, and store it in barely damp sawdust or coir somewhere frost-free and dark at around 50 to 55F (10 to 13C). Check it once a month and remove any soft patches with a clean knife. Replant when the soil warms in spring.
Move a container plant back outside gradually. A banana that has spent months in low indoor light will scorch badly if it goes straight into full sun; give it a week or two in shade first, increasing the exposure as new leaves harden.
Spring recovery and the winter record
Do not judge a clump too early. Bananas are slow to restart and a rhizome that looks lifeless in early spring often pushes its first shoot weeks after you had written it off. Wait until the soil has genuinely warmed before deciding anything is dead, and scrape a little soil away to look for firm white tissue before digging anything out.
The winter record is the most valuable one you will keep with this plant. Write down the lowest temperature the clump actually saw, what protection was on it, and what condition it was in when you unwrapped. Note the date the first new shoot appeared. After two or three winters, that record tells you precisely how much protection your garden needs, and it is the difference between guessing every autumn and knowing.
