Lodging: the problem that costs most
Lodging is when the crop goes flat, and in a garden it does more damage than every disease combined. A hollow straw carrying a heavy awned ear is unstable by design, and once wind and rain get the stand moving as a mass it folds at the base and stays there. Ears lying on damp soil sprout, mold, feed slugs, and are miserable to cut. A crop rarely stands back up on its own.
Three things make it likely and all three are decided before it happens. Too much nitrogen gives long soft straw. Too thin a stand means each plant stands alone instead of leaning on its neighbors. An exposed site loads the whole block at once. A fourth, watering late in the season, softens the ground at the base at exactly the moment the ears are heaviest.
The cure is prevention: modest nitrogen, generous potassium, a thick stand, and string support in place during stem extension rather than after the crop is tall. If a block does go down, lift and re-tie it within a day or two, which usually works, and if it has been flat and wet for a week, cut it immediately and finish the drying under cover rather than hoping. Barley that has begun to sprout in the ear will not store, though it remains perfectly good as poultry feed.
Leaf diseases, and what they actually cost
Barley carries a familiar set of foliar diseases, and in a garden almost all of them are tolerable rather than fatal. What decides the damage is how early they arrive. Disease that takes the lower leaves after the grain has begun to fill costs you very little, because those leaves have already done their work. Disease that takes the flag leaf, the top one, before grain fill costs you a large share of the crop, because that leaf and the awns feed the grain almost entirely.
So the rule for a home crop is to watch the flag leaf and ignore the rest. A crop with brown lower leaves and a clean green flag leaf at grain fill is a healthy crop. The same crop with a mildewed or rusted flag leaf in early summer is in real trouble, and about the only remedies available to a garden are cultural ones applied the following season: sow thinner or in a more open spot for airflow, water at the base rather than overhead, keep nitrogen down, and do not grow barley on the same ground two years running.
Clear the straw and stubble of an affected crop rather than leaving it in place or composting it lukewarm, because most of these diseases carry over on debris and on volunteer seedlings. Volunteers from shed grain are the other bridge: pull them out during the following autumn rather than letting them green over the bed.

Loose smut is the one to act on immediately. The black powder is spores, and they blow onto the flowering ears of healthy plants and infect the seed inside them, so an infected plant left standing sets you up for a worse problem next year. Pull it into a bag on the spot and do not save seed from that block.
Birds, slugs and the pests that show up
Birds are the largest animal problem in a garden barley block and they arrive as soon as the grain reaches the milky stage. A small block is a concentrated, obvious target and a flock of sparrows or finches can strip a bed in days. The only reliable answer is netting, held up on hoops or canes so that it sits clear of the ears rather than resting on them, because birds will happily feed through netting laid on the crop.
Slugs matter at two moments. They take newly emerged seedlings, especially in an autumn sowing on soft moist ground, and they get into any crop that has lodged and is lying on damp soil. Both are handled the same way: keep the surrounding ground clear of debris, and deal with lodging promptly rather than leaving a flat crop in contact with the soil.
Aphids appear on the leaves and in the ears in warm weather. In small numbers they do nothing worth acting on, but they carry barley yellow dwarf virus, which is far more damaging than the feeding itself and shows as stunted yellow or reddish patches that never recover. There is no treatment once a plant is infected. Delaying an autumn sowing slightly, until the main autumn flight of aphids has passed, is the practical control. Wireworms in newly broken grassland cut seedlings off below ground, and the answer is not to sow a cereal into ground that was turf last season.
Sprouting in the ear, and knowing when to give up
A prolonged wet spell after the grain has hardened makes barley sprout while it is still on the plant. Look for a pale root tip pushing out of the end of the kernel, and for ears that look darkened and rough. Sprouted grain will not store and is no use for seed or malting, and there is nothing to be done for the ears already affected. If a long wet spell is forecast and the crop has reached hard dough, cut it and bring it under cover, even a few days earlier than ideal.
It is worth knowing when a crop is not worth carrying further. Barley grown at garden scale yields something in the region of six to twelve ounces of grain per square yard (200 to 400 g per square meter) in a good year, and a block that has lodged early, been stripped by birds and then sprouted is not going to reward more work. Cut it, dry it under cover, and use whatever you get as poultry feed or as green manure biomass rather than trying to salvage food from it.
One thing never to do is store questionable grain with good grain. Grain showing pink, dark or fuzzy discoloration on the kernel may carry ear molds that produce toxins, and no amount of washing makes it safe to eat. Discard it. Grain that is merely small, or merely still husked, is fine and simply has a different use.
What to record about problems
Note the date you first see each problem, not just that it happened. First rust pustule, first mildew patch, first bird damage, first lean in the stand. Those first dates are what let you act early next season, because in a cereal crop almost every effective intervention is one made before the problem is obvious.
Mark on a sketch of the block where trouble started. Lodging, mildew and bird damage all tend to recur in the same corner year after year, driven by shelter, drainage or a hedge that birds sit in. Recording the corner rather than the crop is what turns a vague sense that barley is difficult here into a specific decision to sow that end thicker, feed it less, or grow something else there.
