Watering a crop that tolerates standing water
Barnyard millet will sit in saturated ground for days and keep growing. Its roots tolerate the low oxygen that kills most cereals, which is why it survived on flats and terraces where drainage failed. In a garden that means you almost never water it in the first half of its life, and if your ground is heavy or low-lying you may never water it at all.
That tolerance is not the same as a need. The crop grows perfectly well on ordinary moist garden soil and it does not want to be flooded on purpose. What it will not tolerate is drought during two specific windows: the fortnight around head emergence, and the fortnight of grain fill that follows. Water stress in either window shows up directly as small, half-empty heads, and no amount of watering afterwards recovers it.
The root system is shallow and fibrous, mostly in the top eight inches (20 cm), so when you do water, water thoroughly enough to wet that whole layer rather than giving a daily sprinkle. A sprinkle keeps the roots at the surface and makes the crop more vulnerable, not less. Once the heads have emerged, water the soil and not the canopy: a bristly head that stays wet overnight is where nearly every fungal problem on this crop begins.

Nitrogen: early, modest, and never late
The instinct with a grain crop is to feed it and get a bigger head. On barnyard millet that instinct costs you the harvest. It is adapted to poor, difficult ground and it responds to generous nitrogen by making soft, tall, leafy growth on stems that cannot hold a filled head upright. A well-fed block is a flat block after the first storm.
Give what you give early. A modest dressing worked in before sowing, or a single feed at the three-to-four-leaf stage, is all the crop can use. After stem extension begins, nitrogen goes into stem length rather than into grain, and after head emergence it does nothing useful at all except delay ripening and make the stems softer. On ground that grew a legume or a heavily manured crop the season before, skip feeding entirely.
Wet ground complicates this in one specific way: nitrogen leaches and denitrifies out of saturated soil quickly. If your block is on the sodden corner and the leaves are uniformly pale yellow-green from the tips of the older leaves backwards by the four-leaf stage, that is a genuine shortage rather than the crop's normal color, and a light liquid feed is justified. Uniform pale color, older leaves first, is the pattern to look for.

Three weeks of weeding decide the crop
For the first three weeks the seedlings are fine, slow and easily buried. Anything that gets ahead of them stays ahead, because a millet plant shaded at the two-leaf stage never catches up. After the canopy closes, at roughly four to five weeks, the crop shades out almost everything and you can stop. Nearly all the hand work on this crop lives inside that early window.
There is a particular difficulty here that no other garden grain has. The wild and weedy relatives of barnyard millet are among the most troublesome grass weeds in the world, and their seedlings look almost exactly like the crop. Both have flat, hairless, glossy blades with no ligule at the base of the leaf, which is the feature that distinguishes the whole group from most other grasses. Weeding a millet block by pulling anything grassy will cost you the crop.
The practical answer is to sow in visible rows, even if you would rather broadcast. In rows you weed the space between the rows with confidence and only inspect the row itself. Hoe shallowly, an inch (2.5 cm) at most: the crop's roots are in the top layer and a deep hoe cuts them. On wet ground use a hand fork or hand weed rather than treading the bed at all, since compaction on saturated clay does more damage than the weeds would.
Keeping a filled head upright
Barnyard millet reaches three to four feet (90 to 120 cm) and carries a dense, compact head that gets heavy at grain fill. The stems are stouter than those of the smaller millets, but a rich, wet, over-dense block still goes down, usually in the first heavy rain after the grain starts to fill. Once a grass stem bends at the base it does not stand up again.
- Fix it at sowing, not at flowering Most lodging is decided before the crop is ankle high: too much nitrogen, too dense a stand, or a soft rich bed. If a block went down last season, sow the same bed thinner this season and feed it less rather than looking for a support system.
- Corral the block with string Put a stake at each corner and every 3 feet (90 cm) along the sides, then run string around the outside at 18 inches (45 cm) and again at 30 inches (75 cm). The block supports itself internally; all it needs is something to stop the edges spilling outwards.
- Shelter the windward edge Lodging almost always starts on the side the weather comes from and spreads inwards. A temporary windbreak of mesh or a taller crop planted on that side is worth more than any amount of staking within the block.
- Stop watering once the grain is filling A saturated root plate plus a heavy head plus wind is the exact recipe for a flattened block. From hard dough onwards, keep the ground on the dry side of what you would normally allow.
If the block goes down after the grain has reached hard dough, the harvest is already made. Cut the heads within a day or two and dry them under cover and you will lose almost nothing. If it goes down before flowering, cut the whole block for compost and use the bed for something else, because it will not recover.
What to record while it grows
Write down the date the crop closed canopy, because that is the day you stopped needing to weed, and comparing it across seasons tells you whether your seeding rate is right. A block that closes in four weeks was sown about right; one that takes seven weeks was sown too thin and you paid for it in weeding.
Record the date the first heads pushed out of the leaf sheath. Everything after that is counted from that day: the grain fill window, the netting date, the likely cutting date. Note any feed you gave, with the stage rather than the date, and at the end of the season write one line next to it about whether the block stood up. Two seasons of that note will settle the nitrogen question for your ground permanently. Mark on a sketch which end of the block was the wet end, and how many days behind the dry end it ripened.
