Barnyard Millet Problems: Birds, Weedy Relatives, Smut, Blast and Lodging

Almost nothing troubles this crop while it grows. The threats are birds once the seed forms, disease in a dense wet stand, and the fact that the plant belongs to a family containing some of the worst weeds in the world.

Birds arrive at soft dough

Barnyard millet is a small, accessible, nutritious seed held on a stiff head at a comfortable perching height. Finches, sparrows, buntings and doves find a ripening block within days of the grain reaching soft dough, and a garden patch can be stripped inside a week once a flock has claimed it. This is not an occasional problem; on a small block it is the normal outcome unless you prevent it.

Netting is the only thing that reliably works and the timing is the whole trick. Put it up when the heads emerge and are still upright and green, before the seed is worth anything, rather than when you first see damage. By the time you see damage the habit is established and the birds will work at every edge and gap. Drape fine mesh over hoops or a frame so it stands several inches clear of the heads, because birds feed straight through netting that is lying on the crop, and weight the bottom edge down all the way round.

The alternative is to plan for it. If you are growing the crop partly as bird food, which is a perfectly good reason to grow it, decide in advance which part of the block is theirs and net the rest. A standing block of millet through autumn is one of the best feeding stations you can grow. What you must not do is leave an unharvested block to shed its seed onto the soil.

The weedy relatives, and why this crop must not escape

This is the problem that sets barnyard millet apart from every other grain in the garden. Its close wild relatives are among the most damaging grass weeds on earth, particularly in rice and in row crops, and they are hard to control precisely because they mimic the crops they infest. The cultivated form is the tame member of a genuinely troublesome family, and it crosses back towards its wild relatives readily.

Practically this means the crop should never be allowed to seed itself. Cut at hard dough rather than at full ripeness, carry the heads in a container rather than an armful, thresh inside a bag or bin, and burn or bin the chaff instead of composting it. A cool compost pile does not kill the seed and will distribute it to every bed the compost reaches. If you grow the crop as a green manure or forage, cut it at head emergence at the latest, well before anything can set.

Volunteers do appear anyway, and they are the reason to record where the block was. The following warm season a millet bed produces a flush of grass seedlings with flat, hairless, glossy blades and no ligule where the leaf meets the stem. They pull out easily but there can be hundreds. The efficient response is to let the flush germinate and then hoe the whole bed shallowly in one pass, which clears nearly all of them, and to repeat it once more a few weeks later.

Do not let a volunteer stand reach seed on the assumption that it is only the crop coming back. Seedlings of the crop and of its weedy relatives are effectively indistinguishable at that stage, and a self-sown stand allowed to mature is exactly how the weedy forms establish themselves in a garden.

Diseases worth recognizing

In a garden this is a healthy crop and most seasons you will see nothing. The problems that do appear are favored by the same set of conditions: a dense stand, humid air, poor movement through the canopy, and overhead watering after the heads emerge. Because the plant lives only eighty days, spraying is almost never justified. The useful responses are removal, seed hygiene, and a change to next season's sowing rate.

Smut is the one to learn. Instead of grain, part or all of the head fills with a mass of dark powdery spores held inside a gray membrane that eventually splits and releases them. It is carried on the seed coat, so saving seed from a block where you saw it guarantees it comes back. Pull affected heads before the membrane breaks, bag them, take them off the plot, and buy fresh seed the following season.

Blast is the other one that matters. It shows as gray-centered, brown-edged spots on the leaves that can run into the neck of the head and kill it, leaving a whitened, empty head on a blackened neck. It is worst in humid weather on a lush, heavily fed stand, which is one more reason to keep nitrogen modest. Rust appears as orange-brown pustules that mark your fingers and usually arrives too late to affect the harvest. Sheath blight and head molds turn up on wet, crowded stands late in the season and are best answered by cutting the crop and drying it under cover.

Stop watering over the top of the crop from head emergence onwards. The head is dense and bristly and holds water for hours, and nearly every fungal problem on barnyard millet begins with a head that stayed wet through a night. Water the soil at the base of the stand instead.

Lodging, waterlogging and reading a flattened block

A block lying flat after a storm is the commonest failure after bird damage, and the pattern of the collapse names the cause. Even collapse with stems bent near the base is soft growth from too much nitrogen. Only the windward edge and corners down is exposure. Flattened patches matching the thin places in the stand mean uneven seeding. Stems snapped rather than bent, with hollowed sections near the break, mean stem-boring caterpillars. Diagnose it while it is lying there, because every one of those fixes belongs to next season's sowing rather than to this crop.

There is one further cause peculiar to this crop. Because it tolerates saturated ground, gardeners grow it on the wet corner and then the root plate loses its grip when the ground is fully waterlogged and a filled head catches the wind. Tolerating standing water is not the same as anchoring in it. On a genuinely wet site, corral the block with string from the outset and stop any additional watering as soon as the grain begins to fill.

What you do with a flattened block depends on the stage. Down after hard dough, the grain is made: cut the heads within a day or two, dry them under cover, and you lose almost nothing. Down before flowering, it will not recover, because a bent grass stem does not stand again, and the heads that form will lie on wet soil and mold. Cut that block, compost the straw, and shake the material out first so no seed goes into the heap.

What to record about problems

Note the date the birds first appeared, alongside the date the heads emerged. The gap between those two is consistent from year to year in one garden and it tells you exactly when the netting has to go up. Sketch which part of the block lodged and mark the wind direction on the sketch; two seasons of that sketch shows you where the shelter belongs.

Record any smut you found and in which bed, because that decides whether you can save seed and where you should avoid sowing millet next year. Above all, mark the bed and diarise a check for volunteer grass seedlings the following season, and note roughly how many came up. That count is the honest measure of how much seed you shed at harvest, and on this crop, of all crops, it is the number worth acting on.
