Sowing Barnyard Millet: Wet Ground, Cool Soil, Depth and Seeding Rate

Barnyard millet is the grain you sow where other grain drowns. It germinates in cold, saturated soil that would rot maize or foxtail millet, and it runs from seed to harvest in about seventy to ninety days.

The grain that does not need a dry seedbed

Every other small grain in the garden asks for a warm, friable, well-drained seedbed. Barnyard millet does not. It will germinate and establish in ground that is cold, heavy and standing wet, and that single trait is the whole reason it exists as a crop. It was carried up into hill country and out onto badly drained flats because it produced a harvest in years and in places where rice and the warm-season millets simply failed. If you have a corner of the garden that stays sodden after rain and grows nothing but sedge, this is the crop for it.

Practically, that means the sowing decision is not the usual wait for warmth. The seed will move at 50F (10C) in the top inch of soil and comes up briskly at 59F (15C), so you can sow it several weeks earlier in the season than you would sow a warm-season grain, and you can sow it into ground you would not walk on for anything else. Emergence takes five to eight days in warm soil and up to two weeks in cold, wet ground, and the seedlings are unimpressive at first: fine, pale, grass-like blades that look like a weed for the first fortnight.

The other half of the timing question is the back end. This crop finishes in seventy to ninety days from sowing to a cut head, and eighty is a fair working number for most gardens. That makes it a genuinely flexible sowing: anywhere you have eighty frost-free days ahead of you, you can put barnyard millet in the ground, including after an early crop has come out.

Shallow, firm, and never buried

The seed is tiny, roughly the size of a pinhead, and it carries very little reserve. Sown at an inch (2.5 cm) it will not reach the surface on heavy ground, and a buried sowing is the commonest way people lose a stand of this crop. Half an inch (1 cm) is the maximum on clay and half of that is better; a quarter inch (5 mm) with firm contact is what you are aiming for.

On wet ground the technique matters more than on dry. Saturated soil slumps and seals after rain, and seed sown into a fluffy surface ends up an inch down once the bed settles. Firm the bed before you sow rather than after, sow onto the firmed surface, and cover with the lightest possible scattering of dry soil, sieved compost or sharp sand.

  1. Firm the bed before sowing, not after Rake the surface level and tread or tamp it lightly so it no longer gives underfoot. On ground that has been wet, this is what stops the seed sinking as the soil settles. A loose seedbed and a small seed do not go together.
  2. Sow shallow and broadcast rather than drill Scatter the seed over the firmed surface, or run very shallow drills a quarter inch (5 mm) deep at 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) apart. Broadcasting suits a small block; drills make the first weeding far easier, which on this crop is worth more than neatness.
  3. Cover with almost nothing Sieve a bare dusting of dry soil or compost over the seed and press it down with the back of a rake or a board. If you can still see occasional seeds, the covering is about right. A thick covering on heavy soil is the single biggest cause of a thin, patchy stand.
  4. Water with a fine rose, or not at all If the ground is already wet, which it often is with this crop, do not water at all. If you have sown into merely moist ground, use the finest rose you have. A coarse watering can washes shallow-sown millet seed into drifts and you get bald patches and thick ridges.

Rate, spacing and why you do not thin it

Barnyard millet tillers strongly, which means a single plant throws several stems and each stem carries a head. That makes the crop forgiving of an uneven stand, because gaps close from the sides, but it also means that thinning is a waste of effort. Sow at a rate that gives you a stand you are happy with and then leave it alone.

A thick stand also works for you against the weeds. The critical period on this crop is the first three weeks, when the seedlings are fine and slow and anything else in the bed can outgrow them. A stand that closes canopy quickly wins that fight without your help. The trade-off is lodging: too dense a stand on rich, wet ground gives you soft, drawn stems that go flat in the first storm after the heads fill.

Whatever the purpose, never let a stand shed seed onto the ground if you can avoid it. The wild relatives of this crop are among the worst grass weeds in the world, the cultivated form crosses back towards them readily, and a bed that has shattered a crop of barnyard millet will produce grass seedlings for several seasons.

Sowing into a gap, and sowing into a cool summer

Because eighty days is enough, this crop fits into places where nothing else will. Ground that comes free when an early crop is lifted still has time for a full millet harvest in most temperate gardens. So does a bed that was too wet to work in the early part of the season and only became usable once the standing water drained.

It is also the grain to reach for in a cool summer or a cool site. Where foxtail and proso millet stall below 65F (18C), barnyard millet keeps growing at 59F (15C) and finishes. Upland gardens, north-facing slopes and the shoulders of a short season are exactly where it earns its place, and that is the historical pattern too: it was the crop that fed people in the years the rice paddies failed.

The one thing it does not tolerate is frost. A light frost at any stage takes the leaves and a frost during grain fill costs you the harvest. Count back ninety days from your first expected frost, and treat that as the last honest sowing date rather than pushing it.

What to write down at sowing

Record the sowing date, the soil temperature you measured, and the date you saw the first blades break the surface. The gap between those two dates is the number that makes next year's sowing decision for you: if it took twelve days, you sowed into ground that was still too cold and you can gain a week by waiting.

Sketch where the block sits in the bed, and mark which parts of that ground held standing water. Barnyard millet will grow through a wet patch, but the wet end of a block always runs a week or two behind the dry end and ripens later, and knowing which end is which saves you cutting the whole block at the wrong moment. Note the seeding rate you used as well, in a form you can repeat, and next to it a one-line judgement at the end of the season about whether the stand was too thin, right, or so thick that it lodged.
