Overview
Silver Queen is the white sweet corn that older gardeners in the South and mid-Atlantic still measure everything else against. Rogers Brothers brought it out around 1960 as a standard sugary (su) hybrid, and it finishes late, at roughly 92 days, so it lands in the hottest part of summer. Ears are 8 inches or a little more, slightly tapered, wrapped in tight husks and filled to the tip with 14 to 16 rows of milky white kernels. The plants are big, 7 to 8.5 feet, and need warm soil to germinate, so do not rush the sowing. Tolerance to Stewart's wilt and northern leaf blight helps it stand through a long season. Being an su type it loses sugar quickly once picked, so plan to cook it the day you harvest. Side-dress with nitrogen when the stalks are knee high.
