Overview
Country Gentleman is an 1890 white heirloom famous for its shoepeg kernels: narrow, deep, irregular kernels crowded so tightly that the ears have no visible rows. That dense packing made it a favorite for home canning in Southern kitchens through much of the 20th century. It is a standard sugary (su) type with rich, complex flavor, late at around 88 to 95 days, with 8-inch ears on 6-foot or taller plants. Because it is open pollinated you can save seed; give it 250 to 400 feet of isolation or a two-week timing gap from other corn. Sow an inch deep in a block after frost.
