Overview
Straight Eight took the AAS Gold Medal back in 1935 and became the benchmark American slicing cucumber for decades. Fruits are dark green, smooth and symmetrical, about 8 inches long with white spines, blunt ends, thin skin, crisp flesh and a small seed cavity. It resists cucumber mosaic virus, but is notably susceptible to downy mildew, so skip it if that disease troubles your garden. Being open-pollinated, seed can be saved. Sow directly, an inch deep, into hills or rows once frost is past and the soil is warm and fertile; a trellis keeps fruit cleaner. Produces well in warm weather, suiting spring and fall plantings on the Gulf Coast.
