Overview
Marketmore 76 came out of Cornell University and is the standard open-pollinated slicer for gardens with heavy disease pressure. Slender dark green fruits run 8 to 9 inches with crisp flesh, no bitterness and a small seed cavity, and they stay uniform under weather stress while the plants keep bearing all season. Resistance covers angular leaf spot, anthracnose, both mildews, scab and CMV, a real asset in humid Southern gardens. Direct sow after frost once soil is warm, 3 or 4 seeds per hill 1 inch deep, thin to the two strongest, and trellis for airflow. Even watering matters most; irregular moisture leads to bitter fruit. Pick daily at full size before any yellowing. About 70 days from seed.
