Overview

Boston Pickling Improved carries on one of America's oldest pickling cucumbers, documented back to the 1870s. The fruit is short and blocky, bright to medium green, with lightly ridged thin skin, crisp white interior, and a small seed cavity, all of which add up to pickles with real crunch that keep for months in brine. Pick at 2 to 3 inches for small dills or 3 to 4 inches for whole ones. It comes in early and keeps bearing as long as the vines are picked clean every couple of days; fruit allowed to yellow will slow new production sharply. Sow seed about an inch deep once frost has passed, into warm, fertile ground that drains well. Resistance to mosaic virus and cucumber scab adds reliability. Both vining and bush selections exist under this name, so check your seed packet for habit.
