Accordion pleating: the plant's own record of a water check
A new leaf that comes up creased into regular horizontal folds, like a paper fan or a concertina, is the signature complaint of this genus. It is not a disease and no spray will help. It means that while that leaf was expanding, the plant could not supply it with enough water, so the cells never filled out and the leaf set in a pleated shape.
The cause is one of three things and usually a combination. The pot dried out, even once. The air was too dry while the leaf was growing, so the leaves lost water faster than the roots could replace it. Or the root system had already been damaged, by heat, by salt or by stale mix, and simply could not deliver.
The pleats are permanent on that leaf and never smooth out. What matters is that the next leaf comes up flat. Treat pleating as a message about the last few weeks: shorten the watering interval, raise the humidity toward 60 percent, get the plant out of the heat, and check the roots if the pot has not been renewed within a year.
A slight ripple on one leaf during a heatwave is worth noting, not panicking over. Every leaf pleating, on a plant whose pseudobulbs are also shriveling, means root loss and calls for unpotting and inspection straight away.
Brown leaf tips and blackened bases
Leaf tips that go brown and dry and creep steadily back down the leaf are almost always salt burn: hard water, a softener, or fertilizer residue concentrating in the pot. Flush heavily with low-mineral water for a full minute, repeat weekly for a month, cut feeding to a quarter strength, and repot if the mix is more than a year old. Trim the dead tissue off at an angle if it bothers you; the leaf will not regrow the tip.
Blackening at the base of a leaf or in the fold where new growths emerge is a different and more urgent problem. That is rot, bacterial or fungal, started by water sitting in the crown in cool still air. It spreads fast in the tight leaf bases of a pansy orchid, and a new growth can be lost in a week.
Deal with it by cutting away all soft, discolored tissue with a sterile blade until you reach clean firm green, dusting the cut with ground cinnamon or a proprietary orchid dressing, and moving the plant somewhere with real air movement. Water at the pot only, in the morning, and blot out anything that pools in the crown.
The pests to expect
Spider mites are the main enemy, and they arrive for exactly the reasons that harm the plant anyway: warmth and dry air. The first sign is a fine stippling of pale dots on the upper leaf surface, giving a dull dusty look, with faint webbing between leaf and pseudobulb when the infestation is established. Turn a leaf over and look with a hand lens for moving specks.
Scale insects settle in the crevices between pseudobulbs and under the papery old sheaths, appearing as small brown or white limpet-like bumps that do not brush off. Mealybugs look like tufts of white cotton wool and hide in the same places plus among the roots. Both are easiest to find with the papery sheaths peeled away, which is worth doing at every repot.
Slugs and snails eat root tips and chew notches in developing flower spikes, usually overnight and usually on plants that have been outdoors. Fungus gnats around the pot are harmless in themselves but indicate mix that is staying wet too long and is probably breaking down.

Shriveled pseudobulbs and when to give up on a plant
Pseudobulbs that go ribbed and hard mean the plant is not taking up water. Nine times out of ten that is root failure rather than underwatering, and watering more only makes things worse. Unpot and look: brown hollow roots that slide apart between your fingers confirm it.
A plant in that state can be saved if there is anything left. Cut away all dead root, repot into fresh fine mix in the smallest pot that fits, keep it lightly moist in high humidity and shade, and be patient. Recovery runs on the plant's own timetable and takes a season or more. Some growers keep such plants in a clear bag with a little air for a few weeks to hold humidity while new roots start.
The honest cut-off is when there are fewer than three living pseudobulbs, no live root at all, and rot showing in the rhizome that connects them. At that point there is not enough stored energy left to build a new growth. Composting it and starting again with a strong plant is a better use of a year than nursing a stump.
Prevention is a routine, not a product
Nearly everything in this guide traces back to four habits. Keep the plant below 80F (27C). Never let the pot dry through. Flush the salts out monthly. Repot into fresh fine mix once a year. A plant kept that way rarely gets any of these problems, and shrugs off the ones it does get.
Inspect deliberately rather than casually. Once a month, lift the plant, turn it, look at the undersides of the leaves and into the gaps between pseudobulbs with a hand lens. Two minutes of that finds mites and scale while they are still a wipe-off job rather than a month-long campaign.
Quarantine anything new for three weeks somewhere apart from the collection, and check it twice in that time. Most infestations arrive on a new plant, and pansy orchids sit close together on a humidity tray, which is exactly the arrangement mites and mealybugs travel best across.
