Aralia Pests: Spider Mites and Scale in Fine Foliage

Spider mites and scale are the two pests that matter on an aralia, and the finely divided leaves hide both of them until the plant looks dull. Here is how to find them early and clear them.

Why an aralia hides its pests

A polyscias carries its leaves as dozens of small leaflets on thin stalks rather than as a few broad blades. That fine, lacy structure is the whole appeal of the plant, and it is also the reason pests get away with weeks of feeding before you notice. There is no large flat surface for speckling to show up on, and the leaf undersides are small, angled and shaded by the leaflets above them.

The practical consequence is that you cannot inspect an aralia the way you inspect a rubber plant. Glancing at it from across the room tells you nothing. You have to lift a branch, turn a spray of leaflets over and look at it against a window or under a lamp. Two minutes once a month is enough, and it is the single most useful habit for keeping this plant.

Hold a sheet of white paper under a branch and tap the branch sharply. Spider mites fall onto the paper and start walking within a few seconds, which settles the question faster than squinting at leaflets.

Spider mites: the dry-air pest

Mites breed fastest in warm, dry, still air, which is exactly what a heated room supplies all winter. At around 77F (25C) a small population becomes a plant covered in webbing in three to four weeks, so the whole battle is decided by whether you look in week one or week four. An aralia already dislikes dry air, so mite trouble and a generally unhappy plant tend to arrive together.

Mites puncture individual cells on the leaf underside. On broad leaves that reads as pale stippling, but on an aralia it reads as the foliage simply losing its depth of color and looking tired. Leaflets that have gone pale and brittle will not green up again; treatment protects what is still healthy.

  1. Rinse the whole plant Stand it in a shower or take it outdoors in mild weather and spray the foliage hard with plain water, aiming upward into the undersides. On fine foliage this physically removes most of a light infestation. Repeat every three or four days for two weeks.
  2. Spray a horticultural soap or oil to run-off Contact treatments only kill what they wet, and on divided foliage that means spraying from below and from several angles until the liquid drips. Repeat at five to seven day intervals for at least three rounds, because the eggs hatch after the first spray.
  3. Change the air, not just the pest Group the plant with others, stand the pot on a tray of damp gravel with the pot base above the waterline, and move it away from a radiator or a heating vent. Mites struggle above roughly 50 percent humidity, so this stops reinfestation once treatment ends.
  4. Keep it apart while you treat Move the aralia clear of other houseplants until you have gone two weeks with no new webbing. Mites walk between touching foliage, and an aralia sitting in a crowded plant corner will simply be recolonised.

Do not spray oil on a plant in direct sun or on one that is bone dry at the roots. Water it the day before and treat it out of the sun, or the treatment itself will scorch the leaflets.

Scale and mealybug: stickiness is the first clue

Scale insects sit motionless under a hard shell and suck sap from the stems and leaf stalks. That shell is why a general contact spray often fails, and why people mistake them for natural bumps on the woody stems of an older aralia. Mealybugs are the same problem in a soft white coat, tucked into the crotches where leaf stalks meet the stem.

Both excrete honeydew, so the earliest reliable sign is stickiness on the leaves below them, on the windowsill or on the floor. If a surface under the plant has gone tacky, there is a sap-sucking pest somewhere above it. Follow the stickiness upward and you will find them.

  1. Scrape the ones you can reach Rub each scale off with a fingernail or a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol. On a plant with a manageable number of stems this clears the bulk of the population in one sitting and is more reliable than any spray.
  2. Treat the stems, not the leaves Scale lives on the woody parts. Wet the stems, the leaf stalks and the leaflet midribs thoroughly with horticultural oil, and repeat every ten to fourteen days for three rounds to catch the crawlers as they emerge.
  3. Cut out a badly encrusted branch An aralia responds well to hard pruning, so a stem that is thickly covered is worth removing entirely rather than nursing. Bin the prunings rather than composting them indoors.
  4. Wash off the sooty mold afterwards Once the pest is gone the black film stops spreading but does not fall off. Wipe or rinse it away so that the leaflets can photosynthesise properly and so that new honeydew is easy to spot.

Problems that are not pests

Most people who search for aralia pests do not have pests. They have a plant that dropped a great many leaves after being moved, and they are looking for something to blame. Leaf drop after a change of room, light level or temperature is the normal behavior of this plant, and it regrows over the following couple of months if you leave it alone.

The second false alarm is root trouble read as a pest problem. Cold, soggy compost kills roots, and a plant with dying roots drops leaves and stops growing exactly the way a pest-ridden plant does. Before you buy a spray, push a finger into the compost. If it is cold and wet an inch (2.5 cm) down, that is your answer.

What to write down

Keep a short record of every pest episode and it becomes a calendar you can act on. Note the date you first saw the problem, which pest it was, which part of the plant it started on, the treatment you used and the dates of each repeat application. Then note the date you last saw a live pest.

After a year or two the pattern is usually obvious: mites turn up a few weeks after the heating goes on, scale turns up in the months after a new plant enters the house. Once you know your own dates you can start inspecting a fortnight before the trouble normally begins, which is when it costs almost nothing to fix. Also record where the plant was standing at the time, because a specific position near a radiator or a drafty door is often the real culprit.

Record repeat treatment dates as well as the first one. Nearly every failed pest treatment on a houseplant is a single application that was never followed up seven days later.
