Overview
Table Queen is the traditional acorn squash, still listed by some catalogs as Ebony Acorn. Vigorous vines of 6 to 8 feet set plenty of grooved, smooth-skinned fruit around 6 inches long and 1.5 to 2.5 pounds, with a dark greenish-black rind that may turn yellow on some fruit. Inside is medium-thick, pale orange to golden flesh that cooks tender, dry and sweet. The vines bear heavily and suit either the home garden or a market stall. Unlike hubbard types it is not a long keeper: plan to eat the crop within about four months of harvest. Halve, seed and bake for the simplest use.
