Overview
Golden Hubbard dates from about 1898 and was sold as a more manageable, smaller option than the big blue hubbards. Its teardrop fruit has vivid orange-red, bumpy skin and weighs roughly 6 to 12 pounds, with dense, sweet yellow-orange flesh of dry texture that bakes and purees well. Sow two or three seeds per hill an inch deep after frost and thin to one or two plants. Cut the fruit once a light frost has finished the vines and a fingernail cannot mark the rind, cure 10 to 14 days in warmth, and store cool for up to four months. Still one of the most widely grown hubbards.
