Overview

Ponca Baby is a small butternut developed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with organic and small-farm growers in mind, and an All-America Selections winner in 2021. Fruit is tan-skinned with a small seed cavity and dense, nutty-sweet orange flesh; sizes are reported from under a pound to about 2 pounds, single-serving either way. Vines are shorter than standard butternut and set a high number of fruit per plant, so it produces well in modest spaces. Sow directly into warm soil after frost, keep moisture even, let the fruit harden fully on the vine, then cure for better flavor and storage. About 90 days.
