Overview

Tan Cheese is one of the oldest documented American pumpkins, on record before 1824, and it looks like a wheel of cheese: flat, about 5 pounds, thinly ribbed, with smooth tan skin. The cantaloupe-orange flesh is dense and sweet, and it stores exceptionally well, which made it a reliable pie pumpkin for generations. Being a moschata it establishes slowly in cold ground, so direct sow only after frost has passed and the soil is warm, in hills with room for the sprawling vines. It is a long-season squash at about 125 days; harvest when the rind is hard and uniformly tan, leaving a few inches of stem.
