The crop that asks for almost nothing
Rye is the toughest of the cereals and most of caring for it consists of leaving it alone. It grows on sand where wheat starves, on ground down at pH 5.0 where barley sulks, and through winters that kill an autumn-sown wheat crop outright. A well-established stand survives to around minus 30F (minus 34C) with snow cover, and to somewhere near minus 10F (minus 23C) on bare exposed ground. There is no cereal you need to protect less.
Its root system is the reason. Rye roots go deeper and finer than the other grains, reaching four to six feet (1.2 to 1.8 m) in open ground, which is why it finds water and nutrients that other crops cannot and why it is so effective at breaking a compacted layer and holding a bare bed together over winter. It also means a rye crop in a drought looks better than everything around it for a long time before it shows any stress at all.
The practical consequence is that most of what gardeners do to a rye crop is unnecessary and some of it is harmful. Feeding a crop that is already growing well produces lodging. Watering ground that rye has already rooted into wastes water. The interventions worth making are few and they are all about timing rather than inputs.
Nitrogen: less than you would give any other cereal
Rye grows tall. A grain crop routinely reaches four to five feet (1.2 to 1.5 m) and on good ground pushes past six (1.8 m), which is a foot or two above wheat. Every extra inch of that height is leverage on a hollow stem, and nitrogen buys height and soft tissue in exchange for standing power. A stand that goes flat in a summer storm is difficult to cut, fills its grain badly, and sits wet on the ground where the ears sprout.
If the bed had compost or manure within the last year, feed nothing at all. If the ground is genuinely poor, one light top dressing in early spring as growth restarts is the whole feeding program. There is no second feed. Once stem extension begins, and you can feel the hard node traveling up inside the sheath if you run the stem between finger and thumb, the number of ears is already fixed and any nitrogen after that adds straw and nothing else.
A cover crop is a different calculation. There the top growth is the product, so a light nitrogen dressing in early spring produces more material to turn in and does no harm, because you are cutting the crop before it can lodge. Even then, feeding is rarely necessary: the whole point of rye as a cover crop is that it scavenges nitrogen already in the soil that would otherwise leach away over winter.

Water, weeds and support
A rye crop in open ground normally needs no watering at all. Its roots are deeper than the crops around it and autumn sowing means it is drawing on winter moisture through the fastest part of its growth. The one exception is a dry spell during grain fill, in the three to four weeks after the ears are fully out, when drought shrinks the kernels permanently. One deep soaking at the base in the morning is worth more than repeated light watering, which only wets the top inch where rye has no need of it.
Weeding is largely unnecessary and mostly unwise. A properly sown stand closes over by early spring and shades out almost everything, which is precisely why rye is the standard smother crop. Walking through a stand at stem extension to pull the occasional weed breaks more stems than the weeds cost. Deal with perennial weeds before sowing, not during.
Support is worth putting in for a grain crop in an exposed garden, and it is a five-minute job if done at the right moment. Push canes in around the block at stem extension and run two tiers of string, at knee and hip height, around the outside and through in a couple of lines. Done while the crop is short you lay the string on top of the canopy. Done a fortnight later you are threading it through standing stems and knocking them over as you go.
Stopping a cover crop before it turns woody
This is the decision that matters most and it is the one most often left too late. A rye cover crop is turned in or cut down while the stems are still soft and green, and the window for that closes fast in spring. Left standing, rye lays down lignin in the stems as it heads out, and woody straw takes months rather than weeks to break down, ties up nitrogen while it does so, and is genuinely difficult to dig into a bed by hand. A crop that was an asset in early spring becomes an obstruction by early summer.
- Judge by height and stage, not by date Cut when the crop is between twelve and eighteen inches (30 to 45 cm) and before any ear emerges from the sheath. At that stage the stems are soft, sappy and break under a spade. Once the ears are showing, you have missed the easy window.
- Cut it down in one pass Shears, a sickle or a string trimmer, taken low. Leave the cut material lying on the surface for two or three days to wilt, which halves the bulk and makes everything after it easier.
- Turn it in shallowly, or leave it as mulch Chop the wilted material and dig it into the top four to six inches (10 to 15 cm), where it is warm and the soil life will work on it. Deeper is slower. Alternatively leave it on the surface as a mulch and plant transplants straight through it.
- Check for regrowth for two weeks Rye cut before heading regrows from the crown. Cut again if it comes back. Rye cut at or after flowering does not regrow, which is one of the few advantages of leaving it late.
- Then wait before sowing anything fine Rye releases compounds into the soil as it breaks down that suppress the germination of small seeds. Allow three weeks after turning in before sowing carrots, lettuce, brassicas or any fine seed into that ground.
The waiting period is real and catches people out. Transplants and large seed such as beans, peas, squash and corn are essentially unaffected and can go in almost immediately. It is fine seed that fails, so if a bed must be sown quickly, plan it for transplants rather than direct sowing.
What to record through the season
Three notes carry most of the value. First, the date the crop restarted growth in spring, which tells you how much of the season it has to work with. Second, the date and height at which you cut a cover crop, or the date stem extension began on a grain crop, since both are the hinge point of the year. Third, whether any of it went flat, and if so how tall it was and whether you had fed it.
Mark the position of any patch that lodged, because it is almost always the same corner every year, usually where the ground is richest or the wind funnels. Once you know it, sow that corner thinner or skip the spring feed there. Add the date you sowed the following crop into the same bed and whether it germinated well, and after two seasons you will know exactly how long your own soil needs after rye rather than relying on a general figure.
