Sowing Rye: Autumn Timing, Depth and Seeding Rate for Grain or Cover Crop

Rye germinates in colder, poorer, more acid ground than any other cereal, which is why it is sown late in autumn. The rate, and whether you sow a block or a strip, follows from whether you want grain or ground cover.

Sow in autumn, and you can leave it later than you think

Rye is the last cereal you can put in the ground and still expect a stand. It germinates in soil down to about 34F (1C), which is close to freezing, and it will keep pushing a root out of a seed at temperatures where wheat and barley have stopped entirely. In practice this means the sowing window that closed for every other grain three weeks ago is still open for rye, and gardeners use exactly that: it goes in after the last summer crop is pulled, when the beds are empty and the season is clearly over.

The ideal is still six weeks of growth before the ground freezes hard, because a crop that has made three or four tillers and a fist of root going into winter is a crop that comes out of it strong. But rye sown with only two or three weeks of open weather left usually survives as a single leaf and catches up in spring, which is a gamble no other cereal offers. If the choice is late rye or bare soil over winter, sow the rye.

Spring sowing is possible and is generally a disappointment for grain. Rye needs a cold period to flower properly, so a spring-sown crop tends to stay vegetative, throw a mass of leaf and few or no ears, and finish the season as fodder. That is not a failure if what you wanted was a fast smother crop for a bed you are clearing of weeds, and spring rye is genuinely useful that way. It is simply not a route to grain.

Seeding rate: the cover crop is sown twice as thick

The single number that changes everything is how much seed goes down per unit of ground, and the two uses pull in opposite directions. A cover crop wants a dense, closed canopy that shades weed seeds out and produces a lot of top growth to turn in, so it is sown thickly and never given room to fill out. A grain crop wants each plant to tiller, build several ears and fill them, so it is sown at roughly half the rate and the gaps close by spring.

Sow too thick for grain and you get a tall, thin, top-heavy stand that goes flat in the first storm after heading, with small ears on every stem. Sow too thin for a cover crop and weeds come up in the light between the rows, which defeats the entire point of the exercise. Neither error can be corrected later in the season, which is why the rate is worth measuring rather than guessing by handfuls.

Rye seed is large and heavy for a cereal, so a given weight covers less ground than the same weight of a fine seed would. Weigh out the amount for the bed, split it into two halves, and broadcast the first half walking one direction and the second half walking across it at right angles. That single habit does more for evenness than any amount of care with a single pass.

Depth, contact and getting the seed covered

Rye goes in at one inch (2.5 cm) in moist ground and up to one and a half inches (4 cm) in dry or sandy ground. It is more forgiving of depth than a small seed, but shallow rye on the surface is bird food and rye buried at three inches (7.5 cm) emerges late and weak. What matters more than the exact number is that every seed is in contact with firm, settled soil rather than sitting in an air pocket in a freshly dug bed.

  1. Clear and rake, but do not dig deep Pull the summer crop, take off any thick residue, and rake the top two inches (5 cm) to a rough crumb. Rye does not need a fine tilth and does not need the bed dug over. A freshly dug bed settles under the seed and leaves it stranded.
  2. Broadcast in two passes at right angles Weigh the seed for the area, halve it, and sow the first half walking north to south and the second east to west. Overlap the edges of the bed deliberately, since broadcast seed always thins at the margins.
  3. Rake it in, then firm the surface Rake lightly in both directions until most of the seed has disappeared, then walk the bed or press it with the back of a spade. Firming is what pulls moisture up to the seed and is the step most often skipped.
  4. Water once if the ground is dry A single soaking is enough to start germination. After that autumn rain normally takes over. Do not keep the surface wet, which invites the seed to rot in cold ground.
  5. Cover against birds for the first week only Netting or a thin row cover over the bed until the shoots are an inch (2.5 cm) high. Pigeons and finches take broadcast cereal seed off the surface and will strip a small bed in a morning.

For grain, sow a block rather than a row

Rye is wind pollinated and, unlike wheat, barley and oats, it does not readily pollinate itself. Pollen has to travel from one plant to another, and that pollen is carried on air, not by insects. A single row of rye along the edge of a bed puts most of its pollen out over open ground where nothing catches it, and the ears fill patchily or barely at all.

The fix is geometry rather than effort. Sow grain rye as a square or a rectangle at least three feet (90 cm) across in both directions, so that plants stand upwind of other plants whichever way the wind is blowing that week. A block six feet by six feet (1.8 by 1.8 m) is a sensible smallest useful plot and will fill properly. The same seed sown as a two-foot strip down a border will look identical until heading and then disappoint.

This also means rye takes pollen from any other rye within a considerable distance, so saved seed will not come true if a neighbor has a block of something different flowering at the same time. For grain you are eating rather than replanting, that is irrelevant. It only becomes a consideration if you intend to keep seed year after year and want the stand to stay consistent.

Rye pollen travels far and the crop flowers for roughly a week. If you are saving seed and want it consistent, isolation by time is easier than isolation by distance: only one block of rye flowering in your garden in a given season solves the problem entirely.

What to record at sowing

Write down four things and next autumn becomes far less guesswork: the date you sowed, the weight of seed and the area it covered, the date the first green showed, and how far the crop had got by the time the ground froze. That last one is the useful one. If the note says the crop went into winter with four tillers and it came through beautifully, you know your sowing date is right. If it says one leaf, sow a fortnight earlier next time.

Also record which bed it went in and what came out of that bed before it. Rye following a heavy feeder such as brassicas behaves differently from rye following beans, and after two seasons of notes you will be able to see it in the stand rather than guess at it. Sketch the outline of the block, too, because in early spring a bed of rye and a bed of vigorous grass weed look remarkably similar from the path.
