Bushy, indeterminate
Overview
Zenzei is a Roma-type tomato from Bayer/Seminis that won a 2023 AAS regional award in the Great Lakes and Heartland. Expect oblong red fruit of three to eight ounces with the meaty, low-moisture flesh a sauce tomato should have, and somewhere around 30 to 50 of them per plant. Although the habit is bushy, it is an indeterminate that can top six feet, so stake or cage it when it gets going; the breeder advises against pruning. Around 70 days from transplant to first harvest. The disease package is broad, with high resistance to Fusarium races 1 and 2, Verticillium, TSWV, and tomato mosaic virus, plus intermediate resistance to leaf mold, nematodes, and TYLCV. Not suited to containers, but the tidy plant fits a small bed well.
