Overview
Mortgage Lifter is the famous West Virginia heirloom, developed in the 1920s and 1930s by William Estler and later M.C. Byles, who is said to have paid off his house selling the plants during the Depression. Fruit is pinkish-red, meaty, with few seeds, and can exceed two and a half pounds, though one to two pounds is more typical; the flavor is rich and sweet. Vines are indeterminate and need a tall, sturdy cage or stake; prune suckers and water at the base to limit cracking and blossom-end rot. Ripens in roughly 70 to 85 days from transplant. Several similar strains carry the name.
