Overview

Big Boy is the Burpee hybrid from 1949 that defined the large American slicing tomato for decades. Fruit is a flattened globe about three inches across with red skin and flesh and a full, tangy flavor. Vines are indeterminate and vigorous, reaching four to seven feet, so use a strong cage or stake. It resists Alternaria stem canker and tolerates cracking. Where summers are very hot, plant early so fruit sets before high temperatures halt pollination, and consider a second late-summer planting for fall.
