Overview
German Johnson is a pink-fruited Southern heirloom, grown for generations from the Mid-Atlantic down to the Gulf states and credited as one parent of Mortgage Lifter in M.C. Byles's crosses in West Virginia. The globe-shaped fruit is meaty with little gel, often running from one to two pounds, slightly irregular in form, with a rich, gently acidic old-fashioned flavor. Plants are indeterminate with regular leaves, vigorous and productive in hot, humid weather, and they hold up reasonably well against common foliar diseases. Set transplants deep and give them a stout stake or cage. Yield per plant is on the low side, but the individual fruits are very large. Wikipedia lists maturity at 76 days.
