Overview
Speckled Roman is a stabilized cross of two heirlooms, Antique Roman and Banana Legs, found by Doreen Howard in Illinois. Its meaty paste fruit, about 3 inches wide and 5 inches long and typically 4 to 8 ounces, carries jagged red and orange stripes that show as speckles when young and stay through ripening, and even the leaves show green and yellow banding. Seeds are few. Beyond the looks, it eats better fresh than most smooth paste types while keeping the dry, dense flesh wanted for sauce. Vines are indeterminate and grow 5 to 7 feet, so use substantial staking or caging. Start seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost.
