Overview
Pink Brandywine is the pink-fleshed original that built the Brandywine name, and many heirloom growers call it the best-tasting tomato they have raised. Fruit is large, 12 to 24 ounces and up to a pound and a half, oblate to irregular and slightly lobed, deep pink inside and out, with a complex sweet-rich flavor that lacks the sharpness of red tomatoes. The two main true-breeding lines, Sudduth and Platfoot, are both potato-leaved, a marker of the genuine strain. Be warned that it is slow and demanding: tall, sprawling indeterminate vines are hard to support, fruit sets late, and it wants a long warm season. Start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, plant deep, and stake or cage at once.
