Overview
Legend came out of Oregon State University in 1996, the work of Dr. Jim Baggett, who spent years breeding late blight resistance into an open-pollinated tomato; at release it had the highest documented level among OP varieties, though the reference notes more evaluation is wanted to confirm it, and early blight resistance is also listed. It was made for the damp Pacific Coast and suits organic and low-spray gardens anywhere blight is a problem, including humid Eastern and fall Gulf Coast plantings. Fruit is large, 10 to 16 ounces and 4 to 5 inches, round to slightly flattened, deep red, thick-walled with few seeds and a sweet, balanced flavor. Plants are determinate and set fruit without pollination, so they still crop in cool weather; a cage keeps fruit off the soil. Maturity about 68 days.
