Overview
Hillbilly, also sold as Hillbilly Potato Leaf or Flame, is a West Virginia heirloom with huge, flattened beefsteak fruit of one to two pounds, 4 to 6 inches across. The skin is yellow streaked with red toward the blossom end, and the sweet, low-acid flesh is marbled in the same colors. Plants are indeterminate and potato-leaved, climbing to five feet and beyond, so a strong stake or cage is needed to hold the heavy clusters. Sow indoors roughly six weeks ahead of the last frost and set out when nights hold above 50F. Harvest when the marbled fruit gives slightly to a gentle squeeze. Wikipedia lists maturity at 85 days.
