Overview

Hungarian Heart, also listed simply as Hungarian, is an oxheart heirloom whose roots go back to a village outside Budapest around 1900 and brought to the United States in 1901; it reached Seed Savers Exchange in 1991 via Jerry Muller of Alabama, who had the seed from Ed Simon of Pennsylvania. The pointed, ribbed, pink heart-shaped fruit often tops a pound, with dense, meaty flesh, very few seeds, little core and rich flavor. That low moisture makes it as good for sauce and canning as for slicing. Vines are indeterminate with regular leaves, and the heavy fruit clusters can drag down unsupported branches, so stake firmly. Start seed 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Wikipedia lists maturity at 80 days.
