Overview

Kentucky Beefsteak is an Appalachian heirloom collected in the hills of eastern Kentucky. The indeterminate vines are vigorous and carry very large, oval to globe-shaped fruit in a deep golden-orange, with individual tomatoes reported at up to 2 pounds. The flesh is meaty, mild and sweet with low acidity, which sets it apart from the red and pink Southern beefsteaks and makes it popular with people who find ordinary tomatoes too tangy. It thrives through long, hot, humid summers. Start seed indoors well before the last frost, plant deep after frost has passed, and give the vines a stout cage or stake because the fruit is heavy. Regular-leaf foliage. Allow 80 or more days from transplant.
