Overview
Homestead 24 was selected from Homestead by Asgrow Seed Co. and described in 1956, and it descends from breeding at the Homestead Experiment Station in South Florida, where it was chosen for heat tolerance and disease resistance in subtropical conditions. Alongside Tropic and Walter it carried Florida gardening for decades. Plants are determinate with dense, heavy foliage that shades the fruit. The tomatoes are dark red, very firm, flattened globes of 7 to 8 ounces, and the plant resists gray leaf spot as well as fusarium wilt. It sets fruit reliably in hot, humid summers where many varieties fail, and is widely adapted otherwise. Start seed indoors and cage the plants; in zones 9 to 11 it can be grown for both spring and fall crops.
