Overview
Vinson Watts is a West Virginia family heirloom that came to Seed Savers Exchange through the grower it is named for. Sources differ on color: one describes flattened pinkish-red fruit of a pound or more, while another describes 1 to 2 pound orange beefsteaks whose meaty flesh has few seeds and a mild, sweet, low-acid taste. Either way, the fruit is very large, the vines are vigorous and indeterminate, and the smooth skin resists cracking better than some big heirlooms. Sow seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost and cage firmly from planting. Main-season maturity.
