Shredded leaves are normal and cosmetic
The first thing that worries new banana growers is that within weeks of a leaf unrolling, it tears into ribbons along the veins and the plant looks wrecked. This is normal, it is not a disease, and the plant is unbothered by it. Banana leaves emerge as a single unbroken blade and split along natural lines of weakness whenever wind moves them. The strips still photosynthesise perfectly well, and the tearing is thought to reduce wind load on the plant.
Do not cut shredded leaves off. As long as they are green they are feeding the bunch, and removing them for tidiness costs you fruit. The only reason to reduce shredding at all is appearance, and the only effective fix for that is more shelter.
The exception worth watching: if a newly emerging leaf comes out already deformed, twisted or with a stunted, bunched appearance rather than tearing cleanly after it opens, that is not wind and is worth investigating as a virus or a boring pest.
Reading yellow leaves
Yellowing is the most common symptom and the least specific, so read where on the plant it appears and in what pattern. The oldest, lowest leaves going uniformly yellow while the top of the plant is green and growing is simply the normal cycle of a banana shedding its old leaves; nothing needs doing. Yellowing that starts on the newest leaves, or that shows a pattern rather than a uniform fade, is telling you something.
Potassium shortage, which is very common because the plant needs so much of it, shows as yellowing and then browning that begins at the leaf margins and works inward, on older leaves first, while the midrib stays green. Magnesium shortage yellows the area between the veins on older leaves and leaves a clear green band along the midrib. Nitrogen shortage pales the whole plant uniformly and the new leaves come out small. Iron shortage yellows the newest leaves while their veins stay green, and usually means the pH is too high rather than that iron is absent.

Rot at the base is the one emergency
Nutrient problems are slow and correctable. Rot is not. If a pseudostem wilts suddenly with the soil still moist, or leans and feels soft when you push it, cut into the base at soil level and look. Healthy banana tissue is white to cream and firm and wet. Rot is brown, gray or water-soaked, it smells sour, and it spreads through the rhizome.
The cause is almost always water sitting around the rhizome, sometimes combined with a wound at soil level from careless sucker removal or a string trimmer. Act the same day. Cut the affected pseudostem out completely, well below the visible rot, and take the material away rather than mulching with it. Pull the mulch back from the base of the clump and let the crown surface dry. Stop watering until the top three inches (8 cm) of soil dry out, and fix the drainage before the next wet spell, mounding the clump up if you cannot improve the ground itself.
If the rot has reached the rhizome throughout, the clump is finished; dig out the whole thing, remove the soil around it, and do not replant a banana in that spot.
Cold damage, and what it looks like
Below about 50F (10C) a banana simply stops growing; nothing is damaged but nothing progresses. At a light frost the leaves go from green to a limp, translucent, water-soaked look and then to brown within a day or two. That is leaf damage only and the plant will push new leaves once it warms up.
A hard freeze kills the pseudostem outright. It collapses, turns to a soft brown column and often smells as it breaks down. This is not necessarily fatal to the planting: if the rhizome underground survived, new suckers will come up in spring. It does mean the fruiting clock resets, because any pseudostem that dies takes with it all the months of growth it had accumulated toward flowering.
Do not cut away frozen material while cold weather continues. The dead outer layers insulate what is beneath them. Wait until the danger of further frost has passed, then cut back to firm tissue.
Pests, and record keeping that pays off
Home banana plantings suffer surprisingly little insect damage. Aphids cluster on the emerging leaf spike and on the flower bud; they matter less for the sap they take than for the viruses they can carry between plants, so knock them off with a hard spray of water and control ants, which farm them. Spider mites appear on plants growing under cover or in hot dry air, showing as fine pale stippling on the leaf surface and webbing on the undersides; raising the humidity usually ends the problem. Slugs and snails rasp the young suckers at soil level in wet weather.
The pest to take seriously is the banana weevil, a dark beetle whose larvae tunnel through the rhizome. The signs are a plant that grows weakly for no visible reason, then topples with the base full of dark tunnels. There is no rescue for an infested rhizome. Prevention is what works: never bring in planting material from an unknown clump, keep the ground around the plants clear of old cut pseudostems where the adults shelter, and remove and destroy any infested rhizome rather than composting it.
Keep a short running log of what you see and when: the date of the first frost damage, the date of any rot and what the weather had been doing, the date a pest first appeared. Over two or three seasons this turns vague impressions into a genuinely useful pattern, and it tells you which problems in your garden are recurring and which were one-off bad luck.
