Overview

Dakota Black is an heirloom popcorn with some of the most dramatic dried ears you can grow: pointed kernels so deep purple they read as jet black, on 4 to 8 inch ears from 6-foot plants. The color sits in the outer layer, so it pops white with black centers, tender-crisp and good tasting. It needs 95 to 110 days and must dry fully; leave ears on the stalk until husks are crisp, then cure indoors another three or four weeks and test a handful before shelling the lot. Keep it 400 feet or two weeks of planting time away from sweet corn, since crossing spoils both. The variety has roots in Great Plains Native American agriculture.
