Overview
Poona Kheera is a heat-tolerant heirloom from the Pune region of Maharashtra, India, and the show is its color: fruits start white or ivory, move through pale and apple yellow, and finish russet-tan when fully ripe. Flavor shifts along with it, from mild and crisp when white to sweeter and more fragrant at yellow, and mellow, almost apple-like at russet. The potato-shaped fruits have thin, easily digested skin, and vines produce early and resist disease. Direct sow 1 inch deep after last frost and give the vines a trellis. Many gardeners pick at the pale yellow stage for salads, while in India the fruit is traditionally eaten once it has turned yellow or russet.
