Overview

Improved Telegraph, or Telegraph Improved, is a Victorian English heirloom first bred for greenhouse culture. Open-pollinated vines produce smooth, slim, non-bitter fruits 10 to 14 inches long whose flesh is tender, nearly free of seeds, and mildly sweet. Trellising is essential; fruit left on the ground curls and comes out misshapen. Outdoors it does well in warm climates given support and steady moisture. Sow an inch deep after frost in warm, fertile soil, or start indoors for an earlier crop, and pick at 8 to 12 inches for the crispest texture. About 60 days.
