Overview
Poinsett 76 was released by Clemson University in 1976, improving on the original Poinsett of 1966, both named for Joel R. Poinsett of South Carolina. Open-pollinated vines bear dark green cylindrical slicers 7 to 8 inches by 2.5 inches with good eating quality. It is still a go-to for hot, humid Southeastern and Gulf Coast gardens because of heat tolerance plus resistance to powdery and downy mildew, mosaic, anthracnose and angular leaf spot. Direct sow 1 inch deep after frost once soil is above 65 F, then trellis or leave 3 to 4 feet between hills. Seed can be saved. About 67 days.
