Overview

Bush Champion was bred at Cornell University and released through W. Atlee Burpee Co. in 1980. It is an open-pollinated slicing cucumber with short internodes, giving a compact plant that fits containers, raised beds, and small plots where a running vine would take too much room. Despite the small plant, the fruit is full sized: slender, bright green, 9 to 11 inches long, and tapered toward the stem end. It resists cucumber mosaic virus. Expect first fruit around 55 days from sowing. Compared to Bush Crop, it was bred for wide adaptation. Because bush cucumbers set fruit close together, water and feed consistently; a mulch keeps the fruit clean since the plants stay low.
