Overview
Richmond Green Apple is an Australian heirloom that looks nothing like a typical cucumber. The fruit is small and round, 2 to 3 inches across and shaped like a little apple, with a smooth skin of pale green to ivory-green. Inside, the white flesh is crisp, very mild, and noticeably sweet with a faint floral note, and seeds are minimal; bitterness is rare. Harvest when the skin has lightened toward pale ivory-green with a hint of yellow, since that is the peak of sweetness, but do not let it go fully yellow. The thin skin needs no peeling, so you can eat one whole like an apple or slice it for a pretty salad. The vines are vigorous and productive; put them on a trellis for air movement, and note that the small fruit makes it a good container subject on a compact support. Sow directly after frost into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun and keep moisture even.
