Overview
Dragon Egg comes from Croatia, an heirloom whose fruit really does look like an egg: oval, smooth, and creamy white to pale yellow when ready. Harvest at the white to cream stage, because once the fruit turns orange it is overmature, seedy, and bitter. Picked on time, the flesh is mild and sweet with small seeds and thin skin, and it stays that way in heat that turns ordinary cucumbers bitter, which makes it a strong choice for hot summer gardens and a favorite with children. The plants are very productive in warm weather, and the fruit hangs in clusters that are easy to spot. Sow an inch deep after the last frost into warm, fertile, well-drained soil, and train the vines up a trellis or fence to keep the fruit clean and picking simple.
