Overview

Big Bertha, a Petoseed hybrid from 1978, is the bell to grow when size matters. The elongated four-lobed fruit runs 6 to 7 inches long and about 4 inches wide, glossy green ripening to red, with a meaty wall. It resists tobacco mosaic virus, sets fruit continuously and has good leaf cover that shields the pendant fruit from sunscald. Such large peppers need steady fertility: feed at planting and again as fruit begins to size. Give it warm, well-drained soil and full sun; a stake or cage supports the heavy load. Ideal for stuffing, where the cavity holds a generous filling, and for thick slices.
