Overview
Explosive Ember is an ornamental serrano-type pepper bred as a companion to Black Pearl, but with young leaves in bright purple and flowers in white and purple instead of near-black leaves. Compact bushy plants grow 10 to 14 inches tall and 8 to 10 inches wide, and they need no pinching to stay full. The slender upright conical pods emerge a vivid purple and ripen through orange to red, often with all three colors in one cluster. The fruit are edible and genuinely hot, roughly 30,000 Scoville units, though most people grow it for looks in containers and hanging baskets. Start seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost and plant out when nights stay above 55F; first fruit come in about 60 days, and the plants keep setting through summer heat.
