Overview

Momotaro is the pink hybrid that has led Japan's fresh tomato market since Sakata introduced it in 1985, and it is sold in the West as Tough Boy. The smooth, round fruit weighs about 6 to 8 ounces and comes in clusters of six or seven, with thick, crack-resistant skin, hardly any gel in the seed cavities, and dense, sweet, low-acid flesh made for eating raw. Plants are indeterminate and need staking or caging, and steady moisture helps it avoid cracking and blossom-end rot when summer gets hot; it resists blossom-end rot better than many large-fruited types. Resistance to Fusarium and Verticillium wilt is listed, and it is early, about 60 to 65 days. Flavor is best from spring and fall crops rather than peak summer.
