Overview

Sun Leaper (NC 92191) is a heat-tolerant hybrid from North Carolina State University, released in 1996 from NC HS-1 x NC 84173. It was bred to keep setting fruit during warm summer nights, which is when most slicing tomatoes drop their blossoms, so it is a mainstay for the Deep South. The determinate plants have fairly thin foliage; give them a cage and, in the hottest gardens, a bit of afternoon shade to reduce sunscald. Fruit is red, firm, medium-large, 4 to 5 inches across, flattened globe in shape with a light green shoulder and a small blossom scar. Resistance covers fusarium wilt races 1 and 2 and verticillium wilt race 1. Since it is determinate, a second late-summer planting gives a fall crop.
