Overview
Lemon is an open-pollinated American heirloom dating to 1894 that bears round fruits 3 to 4 inches across, starting pale yellow and deepening to lemon gold at full maturity. Despite the look, the taste is mild and sweet with very little bitterness, and the thin skin and small seeds mean no peeling. Pick at the pale yellow to ivory stage; fully yellow fruits are past their best and the skin turns slightly bitter. The color makes ripe fruit easy to spot on the vine. Plants are productive yet compact enough for a small trellis or container. Direct sow after last frost once soil reaches 70 F, in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Around 65 days to maturity. Fun to hollow out and fill with dips or salad.
