Overview
Long Green Improved dates back to at least 1842 and served as the standard American cucumber for both slicing and pickling long before hybrids took over. It remains one of the oldest open-pollinated cucumbers you can still buy. The vigorous vines carry dark green, sometimes lightly ribbed fruit; harvest it young for the pickle jar, or let it reach 10 to 12 inches for slicing; the flesh is crisp and mild and holds up in hot weather. Like other old monoecious varieties, it needs both male and female flowers to set fruit, so sow a full row instead of one or two hills. A trellis keeps the long fruit straighter and lifts it off damp soil where disease starts. To save seed, let a few fruit ripen fully to yellow.
