Overview
Calliope is an early Indian-type hybrid with oval fruit streaked white and purple, the purple concentrated toward the top and cream below, and a spineless calyx that makes picking painless. Harvest at 2 inches for baby eggplant or 3 to 4 inches for full size, while firm and glossy; at that stage the flesh is sweet, tender and nearly seedless. Plants are compact, around 18 to 24 inches, and set heavily, so they suit containers and raised beds. Start seed indoors warm 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting after frost. The small round fruit is handy for stuffing, roasting whole or halving for the grill.
