Overview
'Buena Mulata' is a cayenne-type hot pepper with a color show most cayennes cannot match. The 4 to 5 inch pods emerge purple, then shift through salmon and orange before finishing a deep red, and they are usable at every stage, though the fully red fruit is the sweetest. Plants are tall and carry a heavy load. The variety came out of the same frozen seed collection as the Fish Pepper: seeds that painter Horace Pippin traded to H. Ralph Weaver in the 1940s, later rediscovered by his grandson William Woys Weaver. Give it a long warm season, stake the tall plants if they lean, and pick regularly to keep new fruit coming. A good choice for gardeners who want ornamental color and real cayenne heat in one plant.
