Overview

Willing's Barbados (the name may appear with garbled quote marks in some listings) is a small, prolific hot pepper that grows wild on Barbados and features in the island's cooking. From late summer into fall the plant is loaded with tiny upright peppers that begin dark green and ripen to bright orange and red; birds are fond of them. Its history is unusual: Charles Willing, twice mayor of Philadelphia, gave the plant to John Bartram in the 1760s, and it entered cultivation there as an ornamental houseplant. Treat it as a long-season chili that also makes a handsome potted specimen you can bring indoors.
