Overview
Black Hungarian is a Hungarian heirloom that earns space as an ornamental and in the kitchen. Sturdy plants 30 to 36 inches tall have green leaves veined in purple and purple flowers, and carry jalapeno-shaped, shiny black pods 3 to 4 inches long with a slight curve near the tip; the black is only skin deep, with green flesh inside, and the pods ripen to red. Heat is mild to moderate, about 5,000 to 10,000 Scoville units, with good flavor. Open pollinated, from Seed Savers Exchange. Use it as you would a jalapeno, and enjoy the foliage in the meantime.
