Overview
Chinese Five Color is a small ornamental hot pepper whose fruit passes through purple, cream, yellow, orange and red on the way to ripeness. Because each pepper is at a different stage, all five colors tend to show on the plant at the same time, set off by purple flowers and purple-tinged leaves. The upward-facing fruit is genuinely hot and can be used in sauces or pickles, though most people grow it for the display. Its compact, well-branched habit needs no support and does equally well in a bed or a decorative pot in full sun. Start seed indoors and transplant after nights warm up. Fruit can be picked at any color stage.
